The project
The power of multilingualism: Learned young, done old?
Children raised multilingually often outperform their monolingual peers in foreign language learning. It is still unclear why this is the case? Is it possible that multilingual exposure in early childhood makes it easier to learn new languages? And can monolingual children who are sometimes exposed to other languages from early on (e.g., on the playground or via TV-shows) experience similar benefits? In this project, we investigate what role exposure to multiple languages during the first years of life plays in learning foreign languages at school, and develop a new therapy for children with language disorders (DLD), recreating a multilingual environment through English lessons.
The research project “The power of multilingualism” consists of various sub projects:
- Young children in a multilingual world
- Headstart in German: Do other languages around us help when learning German?
- Learning German for later: The influence of various heritage languages on learning German
- Improved Dutch through English lessons?
